DIY casting fuel barrels

I need a bunch of 1/72 fuel barrels for my dioramas, problem is, the sets are either too expensive or come with stuff I don't need. Since the shape's pretty basic, I'm thinking of making them myself. I've got milliput and… candles (I know, maybe a weird idea). They don't have to be perfect, just look decent. Any old school tips or easy DIY methods would be really appreciated!!

Since you're going the diy route, you can roll small miliput pieces and turn them into cylinders. If you have a sculting tool, you can use that to press the ring shapes. Once the miliput it cured you'll need to sand it and dip it into the melted wax and finally paint them.

I did a similar thing ages ago for a 1/35 scene. I took some milliput and rolled it around a cut drinking straw to create a clean center. Then, I used the edge of an old X-Acto blade to press in ring lines. After letting it cure, I sanded it smooth and yeah, also dipped it in thinned candle wax to add a bit of texture before painting.

If you want a cheaper way to copy the barrel, try Oyumaru. Just heat it in hot water, press the barrel into it to make a mold, then pour in resin once it cools . Its easy to use and way more affordable than making a full silicone mold.

one tip from me, try to cut small sections of the candle for your barrel height. You can carefully roll them on a flat surface (maybe lightly warm them with a hairdryer first, but be careful!) to get a more uniform cylinder. Just make sure they're fairly straight
