Picked up a sub-$500 3D printer on a whim for some home prototyping, wasn't expecting much. But the first test print came out shockingly clean, with barely any visible layers

well, yeah. that kind of 3D printer is usually kinda limited. you know, it's not just about the price tag anymore, calibration and material quality play such a huge role. What kind of printer did you grab?
got one tip for you. even with a great first print, you need to spend some time on calibration prints (like XYZ cubes or calibration towers). Dialing in your extruder, bed leveling, and E-steps can significantly improve quality and consistency

While I do agree with this, it's fair to mention that 3D printers have come a long way and are way more advanced today than they were back in the day. Plus, with more and more companies popping up on the market, the competition is fierce and they try to do better for a more attractive price.
